I am am thrilled to announce the launch of my dear friend Summer Watkins' portfolio site. I had the privilege to collaborate with Summ and Lucy (Lucia of Utterly Engaged) on her new identity. Summer is also the author of the House of Grey, which has news in its own right. More on that to come!Killer taste and exquisite vision... editorial to lifestyle, interiors to wardrobe… an ideal stylist.
Hooray for Summer!

I'm always on the search for the perfect notebook and who wouldn't love another fun Whitbread Wilkinson product? This one is destined to make me really productive… extra productive… insanely productive, no? Pantone Large Notebook.foreign policy

Came across the work of Foreign Policy Design Group on Behance... really enjoyed looking over their announcement/self-promo piece. "Our idea for this self-promotion project is to communicate our existence and arrival to the new country, Singapore from New York City and leveraging on our name "Foreign Policy". We decided to blend concepts of current affairs, political affairs, maps, the world and the leaders, to be used as content on the piece." View more of Foreign Policy here.

Really enjoyed this new identity for for Ennead Architects. Pentagram, in conjunction with the naming and strategy of LaPlaca Cohen, recently completed the identity. The logotype is a custom variation of Stymie and is paired with the use of Bau typeface. Sophisticated and established.

soapbox
13 May 2010
This week has been rather interesting. We are in the middle of hiring a new designer/production artist at my office and I am in awe (in a good way) of how many applicants are applying. (Thank you craigslist!) My concern? Their "applications". I'm not sure if I'm old fashioned (which can't really be the case considering I only graduated from university in 2004) or just a stickler for the rules, but really? Does anyone actually read job postings these days? Could someone please send me a cover letter that is personalized to me and the position I am looking for? Microsoft Word, really?! Ugh.
Just a few tips from an interviewer trying to sort through a cagillion applications and then I'll get down from my soapbox:
{ 01 } Please read the job posting in its entirety.
{ 02 } If I state no out-of-area applicants, I mean it.
{ 03 } Send a well-written, well-spelled cover letter that is personalized to the company and its current job opening.
{ 04 } Send in all materials requested, in the format requested.
{ 05 } While I appreciate an online portfolio, and actually expect you to have one, do not expect me to proceed to your site, download your resume and a PDF portfolio for my records. Guess what I have a tendency to do? Toss it and move onto the next applicant because you didn't follow through with No.04.
{ 06 } If you are a designer, DO NOT send me anything in Word.
{ 07 } Please implement a proper, one-page resume utilizing your typography and hierarchy skills.
{ 08 } Bring a "leave behind". Whether it be a copy of your resume or a small sampling of your best work. Give me something to refer back to.
{ 09 } And finally, please send a thank you letter or email.
Am I alone here?

nonsensical
29 April 2010

Life never seems to slow down. Between launching a new website for HÔM (or should I say websites, since we implemented what is being lovingly referred to as Supa' Tabs to access all of our sites) and well, life, I have found little time or energy for blogging. That's why I think Chad Hagen's Nonsensical Infographics hit the spot; lately I feel organized, but nonsensical. Plus, they are just plain rad.

I'll be attending the Orange County WordCamp conference on Saturday. (Shhh... don't tell blogger.) If you are in the area, you should definitely attend; they have a great line-up whether you are developer or a layman/woman like myself. Widgets and plug-ins and CMS, oh my!eames century modern

Sorry everyone; non-blogging slacker alert. {Excuse No.01} Freelance.
{Excuse No.02} Speaking Engagement. I have the opportunity to speak at a local university and its been a good excuse to get my bootie in gear and update my portfolio site.
{Excuse No.03} MStetson Design Update. I'm finishing up my designs for the blog. (I'll be back with new designs in tow. Yay!)
{Excuse No.04} Pure Exhaustion. A few co-workers convinced me to start CrossFit. They ever-so-kindly provided me with my body fat percentage today... let's just say I'll be attending more frequently.
{Excuse No.05} Gardening (aka weeding). I have to continue to feed my succulent addiction and my weed aversion.
{Excuse No.06} Aperture. White Balance. I recently purchased a DSLR camera... for the portfolio site, of course.
Now, back to work.

25 March 2009

This ain't your mother's bunco. A group of us girls decided we needed an excuse to gather; we've started a bunco group. None of us have ever played before, so this should be interesting. I am lucky hostess number one and, as you can tell from the lack of posts this week, I am a little consumed by it. I hope to post some photos soon, but until then, you get a snippet of some of the prints I just whipped up for my mantle...
